Sustainable Innovation through Employee Engagement
A recent Gallup Poll shows that 59% of engaged employees strongly agreed with the statement that their
current job “brings out [their] most creative ideas.”- only 3.1% of disengaged employees agreed. As
companies seek to cultivate new strategies, products and services to further sustainability, they must also
motivate their employees to innovate and solve problems. During this discussion, panelists will take a indepth
look at programs that successfully engage employees and result in social and environmental solutions
and innovations.

TRANSFORM AGENTS
A community of strategic sustainability leaders transforming our world within the limits of nature.
I was just talking with Bob Willard this morning, and he brought up a few additional resources that I'd like to share with you all.
From Bob:
The Business Case for Sustainability DVD is at http://www.vimeo.com/952417, password “willard”. This builds on my first two books, The Sustainability Advantage and The Next Sustainability Wave, and is about the compelling, quantified case for companies to integrate sustainability strategies into their business operations. Its 3-minute trailer at http://www.sustainabilityadvantage.com/products/buscasedvd_trailer.html gives a quick overview of its content.
The Sustainability Champion’s Guidebook: The Presentation 53-minute DVD is at http://www.vimeo.com/6577486, password “willard”. As its title indicates, it covers the highlights of my latest book, The Sustainability Champion’s Guidebook, about how to lead the transformation of your organization into a sustainable enterprise even if you are not the CEO. Its 1-minute trailer at http://www.vimeo.com/6533646 gives a quick overview of its content.
TNS’s new planning guide Planning for Sustainability: A Starter Guide is a toolkit to assist organizations on the first steps of their sustainability journeys - to assess their current reality, develop innovation goals for the future, and take early steps to bridge the gap. It is downloadable from http://www.thenaturalstep.org/en/canada/natural-step-guidebooks-sustainability.
Josh Cleveland’s / Net Impact’s Making Your Impact at Work: A Practical Guide to Changing the World From Inside Any Company, summarizes key themes identified in the experiences of social intrapreneurs and provides a model for future changemakers to follow as they create a positive impact in their own corporate positions It's downloadable from http://www.netimpact.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=80.
Thanks to everyone who attended our lively session! Hope you all got a lot out of it - I know we did.
Two things I wanted to share with you all:
1. Triple Pundit article about our session
http://www.triplepundit.com/2009/11/sustainability-and-employee-engagement-anything-goes/
2. Upcoming Impact at Work conference call on sustainability employee engagement this Wednesday

Let's keep the conversations going!
Best,
-Justin
Justin-
Thanks for the great updates. The Triple Pundit article is well done. I had Chris Williams, Director of the Freshwater Program at WWF, speak to our Sodexo sustainability subject matter experts last week on the global water crisis. Was a rich and "engaging" exchange. I find this mix of internal and external expertise best for generating conversation and ideas on our webinars. I am always open to suggestions of who to include!
Best,
Holly

"Dancing with the Tiger", a book by Brian and Mary Nattrass, may be of interest to those working to cultivate a culture of sustainable innovation.

This is one of the best books out there for organizational change and sustainability. I'll be talking about my experiences with sustainability employee engagement at Nike (Brian and Mary played a role in the launch of the initiative in 1998-1999).
